Maelezo ya kazi
Department: Data Management Office
Job purpose
The Specialist, Data Modeler exists to develop and maintain consistent conceptual, logical and physical data models for the Bank’s governed data platforms. The role translates approved business definitions and architecture into reusable models for the warehouse, lakehouse, data marts and master-data capabilities. The role provides modelling expertise and technical review. Enterprise architecture direction, final design authority and BI semantic architecture remain with the Manager/Data Architect and BI Architect respectively. The role also supports model validation, implementation conformity, data migration and reconciliation, and the maintenance of accurate, version-controlled model documentation throughout the model lifecycle.
Key responsibilities
- Develop and maintain conceptual, logical, and physical data models. Design enterprise-wide data structures supporting operational and analytical systems. Establish and maintain subject area models for key business domains such as Customer, Product, Account, Loan, Branch, Employee, and Vendor. Ensure data models comply with enterprise architecture standards and data governance policies.
- Design physical models for staging, ODS, warehouse, marts and lakehouse layers (raw, curated, consumption) using fit-for-purpose techniques (3NF, dimensional/star schema, Data Vault), including business keys, surrogate keys and slowly changing dimension/history patterns. Define dimensional and analytical models optimized for reporting and analytics. Support schema evolution and data scalability requirements.
- Design reusable dimensional and semantic models for Power BI/SSAS and governed data products, so that KPIs and reported figures are calculated once and consistently.
- Define and enforce data modelling standards, naming conventions, data types, key and history rules, and model review checklists, aligned with the EDWH naming conventions and data architecture principles.
- Engage business stakeholders to translate requirements into data models. Work with Data Architects, Data Engineers, Data Stewards, BI Developers, and Solution Architects. Participate in project design reviews and architecture governance forums, and ensure existing models re-use where suitable
- Review and approve data model changes from projects, vendors and DICT before build; assess impact on downstream tables, ETL and reports with the Data Lineage and Integration Specialists; maintain version-controlled model artefacts.
- Collaborate with Data Engineers to design source-to-target mappings. Define transformation rules for ETL/ELT processes. Document data lineage from source systems to reporting layers. Support metadata management initiatives.
- Embed data quality controls within data models. Identify and resolve data inconsistencies and redundancies. Support data quality monitoring and remediation initiatives. Ensure compliance with regulatory and audit requirements.
- Optimise physical models with DBAs and engineers through partitioning, indexing, compression and aggregation strategies to meet ETL windows and reporting performance targets.
- Align models with the business glossary, CDEs, reference data and MDM golden-record structures; publish models and data dictionaries to the catalogue through the Master Data & Metadata Unit; apply classification so personal data is identified and protected per the Personal Data Protection Act 2022.
- Report on model coverage, standards compliance and design review turnaround, and coach engineers, analysts and vendors on reading and using the models.
Sifa za mwombaji
and experience
- Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software Engineering, Data Science or a related field.
- Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP), DCAM certification, Data Vault 2.0 certification, TOGAF, or Oracle/Microsoft/cloud data certification are added advantage.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in data modelling, data architecture, data warehousing, data integration, or related data management roles in a complex enterprise environment.
- DAMA-DMBOK2 Data Modelling & Design and Data Architecture, with working knowledge of Metadata, Data Integration, Reference & Master Data and Data Quality. EDM Council DCAM data and technology architecture capabilities, and how model governance evidences them.
- Advanced SQL and DDL on Oracle and SQL Server, with understanding of physical design and query performance. T24 core banking data structures; Oracle/Exadata and lakehouse storage design; BCBS 239 principles; Personal Data Protection Act 2022.
- Hands-on use of data modelling tools (e.g., erwin Data Modeler, ER/Studio, Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler, PowerDesigner, SqlDBM). Modelling techniques: entity-relationship/3NF, dimensional (Kimball), Data Vault 2.0, and lakehouse/medallion design; normalisation, keys, history and temporal modelling.
- Dimensional and semantic modelling for BI (Power BI, SSAS tabular/DAX). Ability to read ETL mappings and source system schemas and reverse-engineer existing databases.
- Banking data domains and industry reference models (e.g., BIAN, FIBO or vendor banking data models) and how regulatory and financial reports are derived. Requirements elicitation and facilitation with business and technical stakeholders.
- Clear documentation and ability to explain models to non-technical audiences.
- Develop and maintain conceptual, logical, and physical data models for staging, operational, warehouse, mart, and lakehouse layers, ensuring alignment with business definitions, Data Owners, enterprise architecture standards, and history requirements.
- Translate approved business, regulatory, and analytical requirements into reusable enterprise data structures, dimensional models, and source-to-target mappings while preserving data meaning, keys, history, and traceability. Align data models with approved glossary terms, Critical Data Elements (CDEs), classifications, reference data, MDM rules, and BI semantic layer requirements, while publishing metadata through established catalogue processes.
- Apply approved modelling standards, conventions, and checklists; identify non-compliance, conduct model reviews, provide impact assessments, and support escalation to the relevant design or architectural authority. Collaborate with DBAs, Integration Specialists, and Engineers to design partitioning, indexing, aggregation, and storage structures that meet approved performance, scalability, and operational requirements. Measure model quality, documentation completeness, standards compliance, and review turnaround times, while coaching delivery teams on best practices and correct model usage.
